Focusrite Integrates Legendary ISA Heritage into New ISA C8X Audio Interface

The newly announced 2U rackmount interface features 26 inputs and 28 outputs, combining modern USB-C connectivity with classic transformer-coupled preamps.

Focusrite has announced the launch of the ISA C8X, a 2U rack-mounted USB-C audio interface that brings the company’s prestigious Input Signal Amplifier (ISA) heritage into a modern digital workflow.

Featuring 26 inputs and 28 outputs, the ISA C8X is designed for large-scale professional studios and high-end content production environments that require a high channel count without sacrificing tonal character.

The release of the ISA C8X marks the first time Focusrite has integrated its classic ISA preamp circuitry directly into a dedicated audio interface. This move caters to a growing market of creators and engineers who demand the "heritage sound" of 1980s large-format consoles but require the flexibility of mobile control and software-based routing.

The Legacy of the ISA Preamp and the Lundahl Transformer

The heart of the ISA C8X lies in its first two channels, which utilize the same Lundahl LL1538 transformer circuit originally selected by Rupert Neve in 1985. This design was the result of a specific commission by Sir George Martin for AIR Studios, intended to create a mic preamp with an exceptionally low noise floor and high bandwidth. The ISA 110 modules that followed became the foundation for the legendary Focusrite Forte and Studio Consoles.

To coincide with the launch of the C8X, Focusrite has released a 20-minute documentary titled "The Story of Focusrite ISA." The film traces the evolution of this circuitry from its origins in the mid-80s to its current status as an industry standard. For audio enthusiasts, the documentary provides a rare look at the original hand-built modules and the technical philosophy that prioritized musicality over purely clinical transparency.

Modern Features for High-End Workflows

While the first two channels provide the classic transformer-coupled sound with up to 79dB of gain, the remaining six preamps are ultra-low-noise Focusrite designs offering 69dB of gain. The interface also introduces an all-analog Console mode, which adds harmonic saturation and low-end punch via a soft-clip circuit.

Additionally, the 430 Air mode—lifted from the ISA 430 MkII channel strip—applies an inductor-based high-shelf filter to add high-end "shimmer" to vocal and instrument recordings.

The ISA C8X utilizes the same 24-bit/192kHz AD/DA converters found in Focusrite’s RedNet range, delivering up to 125dB of dynamic range. This level of fidelity is paired with extensive digital connectivity, including ADAT, S/PDIF, MIDI, and Word Clock.

The interface supports immersive monitoring formats up to 7.1.4, making it a viable hub for Dolby Atmos mixing and spatial audio production.

Remote Control and Software Integration

One of the most practical additions for modern content teams is the full integration with Focusrite Control 2 software. This allows users to manage routing and preamp settings remotely, including from mobile devices.

The ability to adjust gain and switch impedance from a distance is particularly useful in multi-room studio setups or live recording environments where the interface may be housed in a machine room.

The ISA C8X also ships with the Hitmaker Expansion bundle, which includes the Brainworx bx_console Focusrite SC plugin. This software emulates the original ISA 110 and 130 modules, providing creators with a digital version of the same tonal philosophy found in the hardware.

This synergy between analog heritage and digital convenience reflects the broader industry trend toward "hybrid" production, where vintage character is preserved within a high-speed, scalable digital infrastructure.
