Integrating High-End Monitoring and Multi-Camera Control
As production workflows grow in complexity, the need for integrated tools that can handle monitoring, recording, and switching simultaneously has become paramount. Atomos has addressed this need with the announcement of the Sumo PRO-19, a 4K HDR monitor-recorder-switcher designed for professional sets, DIT carts, and studio environments.
By combining a high-brightness 19-inch display with robust recording and live switching capabilities, the Sumo PRO-19 serves as a central hub for managing multi-camera productions and ensuring high-quality HDR capture.
Visual Precision and HDR Performance
The centerpiece of the Sumo PRO-19 is its 19-inch 3840 x 2160 HDR touchscreen display. With a peak brightness of 1200 cd/m², the monitor remains visible in challenging lighting conditions, making it a reliable tool for both indoor and outdoor production. The panel supports a 10-stop dynamic range and 10-bit processing, allowing cinematographers to realize the full potential of high-end cinema cameras when shooting in log or raw formats.
To support focus pullers and DITs, the unit features on-the-fly log-to-HDR conversion and real-time PQ (Perceptual Quantizer) and HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) playback. The calibrated screen also includes a full suite of monitoring tools, such as focus peaking, 2:1/1:1 zoom, EL Zone false color, waveform, and RGB parade. These features ensure that every frame is technically sound before it is recorded to disk.
Multi-Channel Recording and Live Switching
Beyond its monitoring capabilities, the Sumo PRO-19 excels in multi-camera workflows. It features 12G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 inputs, allowing it to handle SDI quad-switching and ISO recording. Users can record and switch up to four ISO channels in resolutions as high as 8K30, while simultaneously recording the final program feed. This functionality significantly streamlines the post-production process by providing immediate access to switched edits and individual camera angles.
Recording is handled via a CFexpress Type B slot or high-speed USB-C connectivity, allowing for the generation of instant dailies on widely available SSD media. The device supports a wide range of professional codecs, including 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW and DNx, ensuring that the captured footage maintains maximum fidelity for color grading and visual effects.
Connectivity and Synchronization
The Sumo PRO-19 is built to integrate into modern, networked production environments. It features built-in Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet for remote management and cloud-based workflows. For synchronization, the unit includes BNC timecode inputs as well as AirGlu RF and Bluetooth TC Sync, ensuring that all cameras and audio recorders on set remain perfectly aligned.
Audio is not an afterthought, as the unit includes dedicated XLR inputs and outputs, allowing it to function as a comprehensive recording deck for both video and sound. Power options are also versatile, with optional V-mount or Gold mount plates available for battery-powered operation on mobile rigs.
Optimizing On-Set Workflows
For small businesses and content teams, the Sumo PRO-19 represents a significant reduction in friction. Instead of managing separate monitors, recorders, and switchers, a single device can now handle all three tasks. This consolidation not only saves time during setup and teardown but also reduces the physical footprint of the production kit.
Whether used as a primary 1st AC monitor or a studio switching station, the Sumo PRO-19 provides the tools necessary to maintain high standards of quality throughout the production lifecycle. Its ability to bridge the gap between production and post-production makes it a valuable asset for any team aiming to scale their output without compromising on technical excellence.
