Snapchat Consolidates Operations with Retirement of Standalone Bitmoji App by June 2026

Snap Inc. will shut down the independent Bitmoji application on June 30, 2026, moving all avatar customization and features into the main Snapchat ecosystem.

Snap Inc. has officially announced the retirement of the standalone Bitmoji application, marking a major shift in how the company manages its digital avatar ecosystem. Starting June 30, 2026, the independent app will no longer be functional, as Snap moves to consolidate all Bitmoji experiences directly within the primary Snapchat platform. This decision reflects a broader strategy to streamline operations and deeply integrate personal branding tools into a single user interface.

Since acquiring Bitstrips in 2016, Snap has evolved Bitmoji from a simple sticker extension into a foundational element of its social experience. With over 2.7 billion avatars created and 320 million daily active users engaging with these characters, the shift represents a transition from a satellite product to core integrated infrastructure. Users are being encouraged to link their existing Bitmoji accounts to Snapchat before the June deadline to ensure a seamless transition of their digital doppelgängers.

Maintaining Continuity Across Platforms

While the dedicated mobile app is being discontinued, Snap has clarified that the fundamental features of Bitmoji will remain available. Users will continue to have access to Bitmoji stickers, fashion customization, and the sticker library through the Snapchat app. Furthermore, the Bitmoji keyboard extension and the iMessage extension on iOS will remain supported through the main Snapchat installation, ensuring that users can still utilize their avatars in external messaging environments.

For those who use Bitmoji beyond mobile devices, the company confirmed that the web-based interface and the Chrome browser extension will continue to function. This allows creators and professionals to maintain their digital identity across desktop platforms, which is particularly useful for those integrating avatars into educational materials or business presentations.

Strategic Rationalization and Future Hardware

The decision to retire the separate app comes as Snap looks to maximize cost efficiency and focus engineering resources on its next generation of technology. Industry analysts suggest this move is partly a preparation for the launch of Snap’s augmented reality (AR) glasses. By centralizing the avatar system, Snap can more effectively sync Bitmoji identities with wearable AR experiences, such as the recently launched Bitmoji Plaza digital town center.

Consolidating the codebase also reduces the friction associated with maintaining two separate applications that perform similar functions. Recent updates, such as the revival of classic 2D styles in late 2025 and the introduction of AI-powered avatar generation for premium subscribers in February 2026, have already been rolled out as Snapchat-first features. This reinforces the idea that the main app has become the primary laboratory for avatar innovation.

Guidance for Creators and Businesses

Content teams and marketers who rely on Bitmoji for brand storytelling or internal communications should audit their current setups before the June 30 cutoff. If an avatar was originally created through the standalone app and never linked to a Snapchat profile, those credentials must be migrated to prevent the loss of custom outfits or facial features.

Snap’s support documentation advises users to select the "Link Existing Avatar" option during the sign-up or login process within the Snapchat app. This ensures that the history of the character—including any digital fashion items from partnerships with brands like Prada or Ralph Lauren—remains intact. As digital identity becomes increasingly tied to integrated social ecosystems, this move highlights the importance of platform consolidation for maintaining a consistent brand voice across the evolving media landscape.
