Apple Podcasts Video Update 2026 New HLS Streaming and Dynamic Ad Insertion Features

Apple Podcasts has introduced a transformative video experience using HLS technology to enable seamless audio-video switching and new dynamic monetization for creators.

The digital media landscape reached a significant milestone in February 2026 with Apple's announcement of a completely redesigned video experience for Apple Podcasts. This update represents the most substantial evolution of the platform since the dedicated app launched over a decade ago.

By integrating advanced video capabilities directly into the core listening experience, Apple is addressing the growing demand for visual storytelling while maintaining the flexibility that defines the podcast medium.

The shift toward video-centric audio content has been accelerating globally, and Apple's new framework aims to streamline this transition for both creators and consumers. The update is currently available in developer betas for iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, and visionOS 26.4, with a full public rollout expected in spring 2026.

HLS Technology and Seamless Playback

At the heart of this update is the implementation of HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) technology. Unlike the traditional RSS-based distribution that Apple has used since 2005, HLS allows for adaptive bitrate streaming. This means the app can automatically adjust video quality based on the user's internet connection, ensuring smooth playback whether on a high-speed Wi-Fi network or a fluctuating cellular signal.

For the audience, the most immediate benefit is the ability to switch seamlessly between watching and listening. Users can start a show in video mode, lock their device to continue listening to the audio, and then return to a horizontal full-screen video display without losing their place. While Apple does not charge creators or hosting providers for distribution, it will implement an impression-based fee for ad networks delivering dynamic ads through the HLS system later this year. This model provides creators with a scalable way to monetize their visual content without the exclusivity requirements often found on other platforms.

Maintaining the Integrity of the Open Ecosystem

A key focus of this announcement is the preservation of the open podcasting ecosystem. Unlike platforms that require separate feeds for audio and video, the new Apple Podcasts experience allows both formats to coexist within a single show entry.
