Apple Podcasts Adds Native Video Support in Upcoming iOS Update

Apple Podcasts is introducing native video podcast support, enabling HLS delivery, dynamic ad integration, and expanded creator tools.

Apple Podcasts is set to revolutionize the audio landscape with the introduction of video podcast support in its upcoming iOS update. This significant shift allows creators to integrate video directly into their podcasts, offering a more immersive experience for listeners.

While the video files will be hosted by podcasting platforms, Apple's new feature promises enhanced quality and opens doors for dynamic advertising.

How Video Podcasts Will Work

Apple's approach to video podcasts differs from platforms like Spotify and YouTube. Instead of Apple hosting the video content, podcast hosts will continue to manage the video files.

This is achieved through HLS (HTTP Live Streaming), ensuring good quality delivery to viewers. However, this functionality is exclusive to a select group of participating podcast hosts. At launch, Apple has partnered with Acast, ART19, Omny Studio, and Simplecast to offer this new feature.

Dynamic Advertising Integration

For the first time, dynamic advertising will be integrated into video podcasting. Apple Podcasts will implement a per-impression fee for each dynamic ad displayed.

Crucially, the control over these advertisements will remain with the podcast hosts and their associated ad networks. All four launch partners – Acast, ART19, Omny Studio/Triton, and Simplecast/AdsWizz – are also established ad networks, facilitating a seamless integration of this new revenue stream.

Expanded Documentation and Features

Alongside the video podcast launch, Apple has updated its documentation for Apple Podcasts Connect. New sections detail how to determine if a current podcast host supports video, clarify that video podcasts will not be available in mainland China, and provide guidance on publishing video content, including API keys and analytics.

The documentation also confirms that paid subscriptions will continue to be audio-only and that Apple will not break out video analytics separately. Additionally, Apple is promoting Final Cut Pro as an editing tool for video podcasts and offering advice on content creation using AI tools.
