Redefining Portability in Telephoto Optics
Managing the physical burden of heavy camera gear remains a persistent challenge for independent videographers, travel content creators, and media production teams. Lens manufacturer LK Samyang, in a close engineering partnership with renowned German optics firm Schneider-Kreuznach, has officially introduced the AF 60-180mm f/2.8 FE zoom lens.
Developed exclusively for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless camera systems, this innovative telephoto lens prioritizes maximum mobility without compromising on optical sharpness or brightness. The launch marks the third and final installment of the manufacturer's specialized Compact Zoom Series, offering creators a complete, lightweight alternative to bulky legacy setups.
Completing the Compact Holy Trinity Lens System
The introduction of this telephoto zoom completes what the joint developers designate as the Compact Zoom Series trinity. This three-lens ecosystem includes the previously released AF 14-24mm f/2.8 FE and the AF 24-60mm f/2.8 FE optics.
By integrating this final piece into their gear packages, multimedia creators can seamlessly cover a broad focal range from 14mm wide-angle to 180mm telephoto using only three highly portable lenses. The entire three-lens setup significantly minimizes gear weight, allowing corporate video crews and event photographers to execute long shooting sessions with minimal physical fatigue.
Advanced Optical Construction and Close-Up Capabilities
Weighing in at just 730 grams, the lens establishes a new weight benchmark within the fast-aperture telephoto category, undercutting traditional 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses that typically exceed one kilogram. The internal optical design features 17 elements arranged across 14 groups, incorporating one high-refractive element, seven extra-low dispersion elements, and two aspherical lenses to minimize chromatic aberrations.
The lens also introduces exceptional close-up utility rarely found in standard telephoto equipment. Utilizing an internal floating focus system, the optic achieves a minimum focusing distance of 0.35 meters at the wide end with a maximum magnification ratio of 0.26x, providing semi-macro versatility for detailed product and texture shots.
Engineered for Professional Video and Photo Workflows
A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture ensures completely uniform exposure across the entire zoom range, preventing sudden exposure drops that can ruin continuous video tracking shots. Autofocus tracking is driven by a rapid, near-silent Linear Stepping Motor, ensuring precise and silent performance during live video production and audio recording.
The lens barrel is fully weather-sealed to protect internal components from dust, light rain, and moisture during demanding outdoor shoots. Additionally, the physical chassis includes an intuitive AF/MF toggle switch, a dedicated zoom lock button to eliminate barrel creep during transport, and an integrated USB-C port for fast firmware updates.
