The Austrian Audio OC18 is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone aimed at serious studio work. This is an important point: a microphone does not need to be the most famous option in the room. It needs to flatter the speaker and produce clean tracks that are easy to edit.

The OC18 includes several features that make it more flexible than a basic studio condenser.
The high-pass filter is particularly useful. When speaking very close to the microphone, the voice can become boomy because of the proximity effect. The 160 Hz setting can reduce that buildup, making close-mic work more manageable without immediately reaching for an equalizer.
Working close to the microphone can also improve the signal-to-noise ratio and reduce the amount of room sound captured. That can be helpful for home studios, provided the room does not add distracting reflections.
Plosives, sibilance, and interference
Like most condenser microphones, the OC18 is sensitive to plosives. Sounds such as “P” and “B” create bursts of air that can hit the capsule and produce a low-frequency thump. Speaking slightly across the microphone instead of directly into it makes a clear difference.

OC18 compared with the OC16 and OC818
Austrian Audio’s lineup gives buyers a few clear choices:
- OC16: The more affordable option, priced around $450 at the time of the review. It has a high-pass filter but no pad, a slightly higher noise floor, and somewhat lower sensitivity. Its sound is still useful, though it does not seem quite as warm as the OC18.
- OC18: The middle option, with the features most voice-over users are likely to need. It combines low noise, useful controls, and a warm, polished sound.
- OC818: The larger studio workhorse, priced around $1,400. It adds multiple polar patterns, dual-capsule operation, optional Bluetooth control, and more detailed pattern adjustment.
For a voice actor who will almost always use cardioid, the OC18 makes more sense than paying extra for features that may sit unused. The OC818 is better suited to producers recording instruments, ensembles, room sound, or a wider range of studio sources.
Is the OC18 a good voice-over microphone?
The Austrian Audio OC18 strikes a strong balance between sound quality, practical features, and price. It is expensive, but it does not feel limited to one stage of a creator’s career. A serious voice actor could buy this microphone and continue using it as their work develops.
The final recording chain matters, too. In the review, the microphone was paired with a Rupert Neve Designs Shelford channel and only light processing: a small cut around 8 kHz for sibilance and another around 1.5 kHz for a vocal resonance. That suggests the OC18 can produce a finished sound without heavy correction.
It is not the only good voice-over microphone, and no microphone is perfect for every voice. Still, the OC18 is a compelling professional option.
