Google Classroom Adds Gemini Tool to Turn Lessons into Podcasts

Google introduces a Gemini-powered feature in Classroom that lets educators convert lessons into custom podcasts.

Google is enhancing Google Classroom with a new Gemini-powered feature designed to transform traditional lessons into engaging podcast episodes. This innovative tool aims to capture students' attention by utilizing a format they are already familiar with and enjoy, potentially leading to deeper comprehension of educational content.

Transforming Education with Audio

Educators can access this new functionality through the Gemini tab within Google Classroom. The process involves selecting various customization options, such as defining the target grade level, specifying topics, and setting clear learning objectives.

To further personalize the learning experience, teachers can choose the number of speakers and select different conversational styles, including interviews, roundtable discussions, or casual dialogues.

This feature is currently available to users subscribed to Google Workspace Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus. By integrating a familiar and popular medium like podcasts, Google aims to help teachers connect with students more effectively.

Research indicates that a substantial number of Gen Z individuals are regular podcast listeners, and the use of podcasts as educational tools is rapidly expanding, with many universities producing their own and students actively seeking out educational series.

Addressing AI Integration Concerns

While this new tool offers exciting possibilities, it also arrives at a time when educators are actively navigating the integration of AI into their teaching practices. Concerns persist regarding students' potential over-reliance on generative AI tools for completing assignments.

Google acknowledges these challenges and strongly encourages teachers to practice responsible AI use. This includes carefully reviewing and, if necessary, editing all AI-generated content to ensure its accuracy, appropriateness for the specific classroom context, and alignment with local policies.

Evolution of Gemini in Classroom

Gemini for Classroom was initially launched in 2024, and Google has consistently introduced new features to enhance its capabilities.

Recent major updates, rolled out in June, have included functionalities to assist teachers with brainstorming, developing lesson plans, and customizing instructional materials for their students, further solidifying AI's role in modern education.
