Gen Z’s unique media consumption habits are redefining how and where they engage with podcasts, pushing the industry towards more dynamic, multi-platform experiences.

### Gen Z’s Growing Influence on Podcasting

Generation Z (individuals born between 1997 and 2012) has emerged as a crucial demographic shaping podcast trends.

Recent studies show that 47% of Gen Z are monthly podcast listeners, with 28% tuning in nearly every day. Notably, 67% of Gen Z podcast listeners prefer platforms that offer both video and audio options, highlighting a strong inclination towards visual content.

Unlike previous generations that embraced audio as a primary format, Gen Z engages with podcasts more like they do with social media content—seeking a blend of entertainment, education, and community.

They consume podcasts on a wide range of platforms, from traditional audio-focused apps like Spotify and Apple Podcasts to visually driven spaces like YouTube and TikTok.

### The Rise of Video Podcasts Among Gen Z

Recent data underscores this shift: the number of video podcasts in the top 30 chart positions has doubled annually since 2022\.

While YouTube has become the dominant platform for podcast consumption, only 17% of current podcasters incorporate video into their productions, indicating significant room for growth.

Gen Z audiences favor video-enhanced podcasts because they offer additional layers of engagement. A 2025 survey revealed that:

- 71% of Gen Z listeners actively watch video podcasts while listening.
- 49% believe facial expressions and gestures enhance their understanding of content.
- 45% feel a stronger connection to hosts when visual elements are included.

### Platforms Catering to Gen Z Preferences

Given these trends, major podcast platforms are adapting to meet Gen Z’s expectations:

- Spotify has expanded video podcast offerings and introduced monetization incentives for creators to encourage video content.
- YouTube remains the go-to platform for video podcast discovery, largely due to its superior recommendation algorithms.
- TikTok is emerging as a podcast discovery tool, with creators repurposing short clips to drive traffic to full episodes.

### The Future of Podcasting for Gen Z

As platforms continue to integrate video features, Gen Z’s expectations will likely shape the future of podcasting. The trend suggests that podcasts will increasingly blend entertainment, visual storytelling, and social media-style interaction. For creators, balancing high-quality audio production with engaging video content will be key to capturing this audience.
